With the Allied air forces starting to strike back with bombing raids on cities like Berlin and Hamburg, the German high command ordered the construction of massive concrete anti-aircraft towers in the middle of these core cities. The Luftwaffe would lead the air defenses from these fortresses and they successfully made aerial bombardment a very costly affair. During the fall of Berlin the Tiergarten "Zoo tower" would come to serve as the last point of resistance in the city, with the last remaining Wehrmacht armored units rallying around the tower for a final futile stand against the the overwhelming forces of the Soviet Red Army. The Zoo tower was demolished in 1947, but towers in cities like Vienna and Stuttgart still remain and have been converted to alternative use.
